Between Hills & Horizons

This summer, artist Theresa Eisenbarth captures the beauty of the prairies with a new solo exhibition. Featuring open roads, historic homes, and other familiar sights from "just down the way", Theresa uses her medium to reflect the rich, glowing geography that makes Maple Creek unlike any other small town you've ever found yourself in.

See the prairies as they really are

Theresa paints what she knows, and what you might remember from your favourite small town. Don't miss the chance to experience your own story reflected
in paint.

From the Artist:

“As someone who grew up just down the road in Medicine Hat, I’ve always been drawn to the subtle variations in landscape and light that make each prairie town feel distinct. This quest to find what makes a place unique—what sets it apart from every other small town on the map—is at the heart of my work.

Maple Creek does this beautifully. Yes, like many prairie communities, it tells the story of the Northwest Mounted Police—but it does so from a truly local perspective, shaped by the memories and voices of the people who live there. That same spirit of specificity is what I try to capture in my paintings: real places, real roads, real skies. I’m not interested in generic prairie scenes. I want viewers to recognize a familiar back alley, the curve of a distant hill, or the quality of light they’ve seen from their own kitchen window.

This newest piece I’m working on is still in progress. I’ve been going back and forth on the foreground, deciding whether to adjust it later in the week. One of the big lessons in painting (and one I’m constantly learning) is knowing when to stop. Not overworking a piece can be harder than it sounds”
